Question: Heidi Welch asks AAATravelViews Q&A: Does AAA offer services to provide vouchers for bed & breakfasts in Ireland? I will be visiting in April with a cousin and my brother. Also, wondering how to communicate via phone in Ireland. I used to use a phone card but they are disappearing there as they are here and are not as reliable. I have a Verizon cell phone, but wondering if it will work over there.
Answer: AAA's Lynda Gwynn replies: AAA Travel works with two preferred partners that can assist with independent travel- Travel Impressions and Travel Bound. However, these two entities generally offer a variety of hotels versus bed & breakfast accommodations. Traveling without advance reservations may be risky if you are trying to stay within a fixed timeframe and/or budget. My suggestion is to work with your local AAA travel professional to plan a desired itinerary for booking independent B&Bs in advance for the nights and locations needed. This will also save you time looking and booking once you get there...the Emerald Isle is too beautiful to miss worrying about where to lay your head each night! If you have time on your side, then go for it!
As for communicating in Ireland, AAA's Ginny Foley says AAA's Show Your Card and Save partner -
PlanetFone - provides phone rental for access to an international wireless network that is the standard in over 150 countries worldwide. The mobile phones have an English-speaking customer support help number, which is available 24 hours a day, every day. The mobile phone comes complete with two batteries, chargers and adapters, and car chargers in a lightweight carrying case. You will need to check directly with Verizon Wireless to see if you can add international phone service to your existing service...they offer international roaming or Global Phone depending on your needs.
