Drive Trips: Cape Cod and Washington State

Submitted by Laurie Peterson, April 21, 2009

These featured AAA Drive Trips - just two of over 100 available - are both in appealing summer destinations. Click on the Drive Trip's name to access the complete printable itinerary.

The Cape Cod Drive Trip in Massachusetts takes you from Buzzard's Bay to Falmouth, Wood's Hole (where you can catch the ferry to Martha's Vineyard) to Hyannis at the tip of Cape Cod. Beaches, shopping, sightseeing and, of course, seafood are the highlights of this coastal drive. AAA Road Reporter Mike Robb particularly recommends "the towns of Provincetown and Sandwich. THere's a lot of great history here. I recommend the 'shoulder-season' times if you are on a budget and want to avoid crowds."

On the other side of the country, the Washington Cascade Loop Drive Trip was once dubbed the Grand Tour by early roadway adventurers. From Seattle, this 383-mile loop goes through Coupeville, North Cascade National Park, Twisp, Leavenworth and back to Seattle, through mossy rain forests, past orchards and over mountain passes. The Road Reporter says "Leavenworth is a very nice town and is definitely worth spending a couple of days in to see all of its Tudor-style buildings and many shops. There are a lot of photo-ops around there as well. But, please, be safe and don’t drive this one in the winter."

Drive slowly and carefully on the Cape in the summer!

I travel the Cascade Loop Scenic Highway several times each year. Despite this, I am always completely awestruck by the North Cascades Scenic Highway 20 with its incredibly rugged mountains and completely untouched natural environment. The contrast of these stunning mountains to that of the semi-arid Columbia River Valley on the Eastern side of this Loop, or Whidbey Island on the Western side make such a diverse and pleasing experience. If you want additional information to help plan your trip you can visit the official Cascade Loop Scenic Highway website at www.CascadeLoop.com as well. Refresh your sense of wonder on this gorgeous trip!
