International Driving Permits From AAA

Submitted by Laurie Peterson, January 13, 2010

If you're thinking about driving on your next overseas vacation, as our bloggers did in Ireland and Mexico, you'll want to get an IDP.

What is an International Driving Permit or IDP?
An IDP functions as an official translation of a U.S. driver's license into ten foreign languages

Why would I need one?
If you’re planning to drive overseas, many countries do not recognize U.S. driver's licenses, however, most countries accept and may require an International Driving Permit (IDP) or Inter-American Driving Permit (IADP).  Overseas rental car companies may require one as well.

It’s a good idea to carry an International Driving Permit along with your passport when you travel overseas even if you're not planning to drive, as the IDP is a recognizable form of photo identification which helps communicate with foreign authorities. But remember, these licenses are not intended to replace valid U.S. state drivers licenses and must be used in conjunction with a valid U.S. license.  Please note that the United States does NOT issue International Driving Permits to foreign visitors, so you will need to obtain this document before traveling to the U.S.

How do I get an International Driving Permit?
AAA clubs are one of only two entities authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs to U.S. residents who hold a valid U.S. drivers license. AAA also can issue the Inter-American Driving Permit (IADP)  that is recognized in Mexico, Central and South America. To apply for an IDP or IADP, you must be at least age 18. You will need your valid U.S. driver's license, $15 and two original passport-type photos (also available at your AAA office.) You will also be required to fill out an International Driving Permit application in advance or at the office. The downloadable and printable IDP application also lists the geographic areas in which the IDP is honored. International Driving Permits may not be issued more than six (6) months in advance of desired effective date and are valid for just one year. Call your local AAA office for further information on applying in person or by mail.

A word of caution:
Be aware that IDPs are sold over the Internet and in person by individuals not authorized by the U.S. Department of State. Many of these IDPs are sold for large sums of money, far greater than what is charged by authorized entities. Go to AAA to be sure you are purchasing from an authorized issuer.

Getting one of those has saved my butt a couple of times, especially in Europe. When trains are late and planes too expensive, cars are an easy option as most of Europe is easily accessible through their great highway system.

Who says IDPs are not valid in the US? IDPs certainly are valid for foreign visitors to the US. A little more accuracy would be appreciated.

Thank you for the clarification. The post has been edited to note that the United States does not issue International Driving Permits to foreign visitors, those must be obtained before traveling to the U.S.
