Grand Canyon In The Spring

Submitted by Laurie Peterson, February 18, 2010
From our Q&A mailbox:

Question: Do you recommend a road trip to Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon in late March (Spring Break) with a tent trailer? We are concerned about road conditions and enjoyment if weather is bad. We will be traveling with boys age 10 and 7 and we have a heater and generator.

Answer: Our AAA Arizona contacts say that March can be a heavy snow month, but the end of March may not be too bad. In the Zion area in March the temperatures at night are in the 30's and day time temps are upper 40's, lower 50's. The Grand Canyon can run in the 20's at night and 40's during the day. If the roads are clear there is no problem with the trailer.

The National Park Service has complete online information for the three parks you are interested in. For example, for the Grand Canyon it tells you that the South Rim is open all year but that the North Rim is only open mid-May to mid-Oct. There is a good section on Grand Canyon weather to help you anticipate how the weather might be in late March -- look again just before you start your trip to check out the current road conditions. After seeing what is open and closed in late March, you’ll get a good idea as to what you’ll be able to safely and enjoyably do during the day. One good aspect of going in spring is that you will avoid the delays and crowds common in the summer. If you haven’t done so already, you can check out the articles in our National Parks section  - the National Park Road Trip might be of particular interest to you. Also check out AAA.com Travel Guides on the national parks. Using TripTik Travel Planner, you can plan your trip, with Grand Canyon as a destination (use the national parks choice in the drop down menu for your destination). If you’d like to modify the route, simply use the “Modify Route” tool and click on Show Places to select to view icons for lodgings, restaurants and attractions along the way.  TripTik Travel Planner also provides historic traffic congestion information, as well as current highway construction along your trip (under Show Places make sure the there is a check mark next to construction information).  This information is located at the bottom of each “Maps & Turn by Turn Directions” page when you view/print your route.  Just look for the Advisory and Construction symbols.

If you would prefer to plan your trip in person, please visit your local AAA office
